Florian Birkner

Bio/Description

Florian Birkner, a visiting graduate student from Germany, is pursuing his doctorate in Classical Archaeology, focusing on Greek settlements in the western Mediterranean. He completed his B.A. in Classical Archaeology at the Universities of Berlin and Naples. At the University of Bonn, he earned an M.A. in Archaeological Sciences, focusing on Classical and Christian Archaeology. He then began work on a doctoral thesis on the topic of Western Greek quarries and the associated resource management. He is writing the dissertation in the framework of the Berlin Graduate School of Ancient Studies.

Florian has taken part in numerous excavations with the Universities of Berlin (Pompeii/Italy), Jena (Bad Neustadt a. Saale/Germany), Naples (Pompeii/Italy) and Bonn (Cerveteri/Italy). He also took part in the excavations of the Istituto Nazionale di Archeologia e Storia dell'Arte in Pietrabbondante, Italy. For the 19th ICCA 2018 (AIAC) in Cologne/Bonn, he was responsible for the coordination of the congress proceedings. Currently, he is an elected member of the main committee of the German Association of Archaeologists (Deutscher Archäologen-Verband e.V.).
