Margaret Hire is a Ph.D. student in modern and contemporary art. Her research focuses on Central and Eastern Europe, with an emphasis on 20th century artwork of Germany and Poland. She is interested in the formal manifestations of materiality across a range of media, especially related to the photographic image. Margaret has additional interest in the topics of atmosphere and environment, along with how such aforementioned concerns might influence perception and shape manners of viewing.  

Margaret received a B.A. in the History of Art and Architecture and German Studies from Brown University and an M.A. in the humanities program at the University of Chicago. She has held positions with various museums and institutions including: Education Department Intern, The Grand Rapids Art Museum; Photo Archives Intern, The Frick Collection; Gallery Intern, Tanya Bonakdar Gallery; Intern for the Photography and Prints Departments, Phillips Auctioneers; Gallery Associate, Garth Greenan Gallery; Graduate Curatorial Intern, The Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago. She is the recipient of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award, Berlin, Germany (2016) and a Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship to pursue study of the Polish Language at the University of Chicago (2019).
