After graduating from Yale College, where she majored in art history, Ying was awarded a DAAD scholarship for research and study in Germany at Humboldt University in Berlin. She went on to receive an M.A. from the History of Art Department at University College London (2013) with a thesis on Walter Benjamin’s concept of technology.

Her research in art and visual history involves photography, collage, and montage, and is often concerned with the historiography of art in the 19th and early 20th centuries, Frankfurt School critical theory and its legacies, philosophies of media and technology, as well as questions of realism and documentary.
