Bio/Description

Profile

Susana Costa Amaral works at the intersections of visual arts and politics, performance studies, critical race theory, and queer studies. She joined Princeton as a Presidential Postdoctoral Research Fellow after earning her PhD from New York University. Her dissertation analyzed how contemporary Brazilian artists reveal the deep ties between far-right ideology and Brazil’s colonial past. Her new research project examines the role of artificial intelligence in Latin American arts and culture. This project complicates the dual function of AI as both a visual tool and a source of extraction, particularly considering the increasing environmental impact this technology is expected to have in Latin America in the coming years.
