Coming Spring 2024: ART 484/ENV 484/ECS 484 “Elemental Ecologies in Early Modern Art”

Nov. 14, 2023

Join visiting Professor Christine Göttler to investigate the hidden forces of nature, the beginning and end of the world, the boundaries between the natural and the artificial, and the transformative powers wielded by Netherlandish artists.

“My current interest in the elements and other “ultimate” particles of the material world grew out of a long preoccupation with the early modern landscape or, rather, with what contemporaries would have called the unruliness and unpredictability of nature. Studying the fragile ecologies of mineral, vegetable, and animal life created by sixteenth- and seventeenth-century artists in a new (small-scale) genre may help us rethink the long and conflicted history of the relationship between art and nature with its repercussions up to the present day.” —Professor Christine Göttler, Instructor
